Following the victory of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) candidate Yousuf Raza Gilani from Islamabad in the Senate elections, Prime Minister Imran Khan decided to seek a vote of confidence from Parliament.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood said that the face, voice and actions of Ali Haider Gilani are in front of the people.
He announced that the party and Prime Minister Imran Khan have decided to take a vote of confidence from this House.
He said that it has been unanimously decided that Imran Khan will take a vote of confidence from the House, and it will be clear who is standing where. Today is a sad day for democracy. Those who were the pioneers of democracy have trampled on democratic values.
The Foreign Minister said that we are based on our ideology, they have come together, there is no harmony between them. If the members were angry, they would leave openly.
Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that we will continue to fight the battle of truth and falsehood.
It may be recalled that in the Senate elections, voting took place in the National Assembly on the general seat of Islamabad in which the opposition candidate, former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, was declared the winner.
Re-voting was held by the government but Yousuf Raza Gilani was also successful in re-voting.
According to the returning officer of the National Assembly, 340 votes were cast out of which Yousuf Raza Gilani got 169 votes while Hafeez Sheikh got 164 votes. Thus, Yousuf Raza Gilani defeated Hafeez Sheikh by five votes and was elected senator from Islamabad.
According to the returning officer, 7 votes were rejected.
